On December 18, Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) adopted a position on the proposed EU classification system for green investments (taxonomy). The position focuses on the proposed delegated regulation on a climate change mitigation and adoption taxonomy, presented by the European Commission in November 2020.

This year, the Arctic Futures Symposium was organized for the eleventh year in a row by the International Polar Foundation and its partners. The conference was held online and lasted for three days. Thomas Norvoll, next Chairman of NSPA between 2021-2023 and Chair of the Board at North Norway European Office, participated as speaker on the third day.
02 Dec 2020 NSPA adopts positions on the final negotiations of Cohesion Policy 2021-2027 and EU’s initiative for a long-term vision for rural areas
On December 2, Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) met for the last steering committee meeting of the year. The network adopted a position on the final negotiations of Cohesion Policy 2021-2027 and one on the EU initiative for a long-term vision for rural areas. The meeting was also the last for Nils-Olof Lindfors as a chairman before the presidency goes over to North Norway in 2021. 05 Nov 2020 NSPA and the EU Arctic Ambassador about EU Arctic Policy
On the 4th of November, the Brussels offices and steering committee of Northern Sparsely Populated Areas, NSPA, met with the EU Arctic Ambassador, Michael Mann, to discuss the NSPA's role in the EU's ongoing review of the 2016 Arctic Strategy. Mann emphasized the importance of continuing the dialogue and the interdependence between the EU and the NSPA.

The webinar ´Circular economy in the Arctic Industries´ was broadcasted as part of the European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC) by the Brussels offices of the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) and the Brussels office of Scotland Highlands & Islands. The topics were regional cooperation and circular economy in the Arctic.
29 Okt 2020 NSPA universities met the EU Arctic Ambassador to discuss Arctic research
On the 22nd of October, representatives from the University of the NSPA had a digital meeting with the Arctic Ambassador of EU, Michael Mann. EU Arctic Policy in relations to research and innovation, and the importance of international research collaboration for sustainable development in the Arctic were discussed.

On October 13, North Sweden organized a webinar with Elsi Katainen and Erik Bergkvist, Members of the European Parliament, together with OECD, the European Commission and Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA). The discussions focused on the NSPA's role for enabling a sustainable regional development in the European Arctic.
13 Okt 2020 Northern Sparsely Populated Areas steering committee meeting on the EU budget and EU’s Arctic policy
On October 1, the steering committee for Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NPSA) met for a digital meeting. The agenda for the meeting included the ongoing negotiations on the next long-term budget (MFF) and NSPA’s position on the EU’s new Artic Policy.
07 Okt 2020 NSPA in digital meeting with the European commission about future regional policy
On September 22, representatives from Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA), met with the Deputy Head of Cabinet for Commissioner for Regional Policy, Marlene Madsen. The meeting enabled NSPA to put forward key messages for a continuation of regional development in the northernmost Europe. NSPA was commended for the strategic way the regions have used the structural funds in the current budget period. Madsen emphasized that the NSPA regions have both natural resources and technological skills important for a green transition.
